5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for skaters of all levels and age
I highly recommend this book. It details off-ice conditioning programs for singles, pairs, or dance and skaters of all ages and skill levels. Strength training, effective warm-up and cool down, plyometric, and other off-ice conditioning programs are detailed, as well as effectively improving your muscular and cardiovascular conditioning on ice. The only negative to this book is the photos and text explaining some of the moves - they could be a bit more descriptive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must have books for competitive skaters in differnt levels
This is a wonderful book that provides both in-depth analysis of why off ice training is critical to a successful skater and step by step off ice strength and conditioning manual. It totally changed my view of ice skating. It helps my daughter to train smarter.Highly recommend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tom Collins is The Greatest!!
If I could rate this book a 10 I would. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book of Skating!
I love this book!!Brennan gives a year by year history of each tour, she highlights favorite skaters, talks about unique antics/events that occured with touring, but my favorite is when she gives a blow by blow 24 hour day in the life of the skaters and the Champions on Ice staff.Marvelous!Page after page is devoted to setting up of the ice show (they start early in the wee morning hours), problems that occur, and how the skaters spend their time, warm up prior to the show, what they do during the performance.Lots of pictures of the skaters on and off the ice.One of the best skating books ever!

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining read and a treat for skating fans
Who can fail but sympathize with Ms. Baiul, an anomaly in this glittering sport of young women who usually have it all - looks, money, and loving families. That Oksana managed to achieve greatness with none of the above says it all about her talent. Oksana's fans won't be disappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Oksana - professional but not personal
I do not like biographies, yet this book was able to keep my attention. Oksana discusses her life as it relates to various parts of ice skating. The only drawback is that you do not learn about the everyday Oksana. You do not learn about any of her other interests (sports done in her training routine do not necessarily count as "fun, relaxing hobbies"), her favorite foods, favorite types of music, or her feelings about having a family or dating.5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for the skater!!!
This book is fulled with beautiful photos and tips ... Read more

Editorial Review

After watching a figure-skating performance, do you ever wonder what just happened on the ice? The skater supposedly executed a flawless double Salchow and triple Lutz, among other things, and then the judges posted a bunch of numbers. Maybe you need help from the Dummies. 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!Very well written by a champ!
This book was not only extremely informative but it was written with a fun, light tone that made reading enjoyable.Everything was very user friendly and never, at any given time, was I slightly confused or bored.Great book for skaters (because secrets are revealed) and non-skaters (who always wondered about the names of things, how certain moves are done, etc.).

5-0 out of 5 stars Dummies?
The title might just as well be "Ice skating for aspiring professionals."In any case, a wonderful book about skating, well written and clear.I saw the chart on the Axel and thought, "Oh!It's just a waltz jump with a full turn at the end.Wow!I can do that!"Fortunately, I haven't attempted that yet. I'd have to be a dummy to try.Knees are nice. (BTW I'm well over 13 y.o.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reading, although the judging system has changed
This is a great book for fans of the sport, but especially those armchair fans who know nothing about the elements but want to appreciate the finer points of this lovely sport. An explanation of the jumps and spins, plus how a program is put together and an overview of the rules, make this an entertaining and useful tool. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars mixed feelings
As a newbie skater, this book offers some good general info and advice as most instructional books do.
4-0 out of 5 stars This was one of the better skating books...
This book has wonderful descriptions about just about everything in skating, except for take off technique. I dont understand why the author goes into extreme detail explaining how to do a three turn before a flip, but barley mentions how to take off into the actual jump.(This has been the case with just about every skating book I have read) Also the pictures are in black and white. The book has some very helpful tips and I think it is worth reading I just wish he would explain take off in a lot more detail.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Excellent Instruction"
This book is excellent for both beginners learning basic figure skating techniques and more advanced skaters who want to improve their overall ability on the ice. It includes helpful advice on improving your technical ability and provides possible mistakes that may slow your progress, so you can treat this book as a sort of "coach". It also includes pictoral descriptions for executing many of the moves, which I found very helpful. However, one downside is that this book was written in 1988 so it is a little old fashioned (there's mention of compulsory figures, which have since been eliminated from competition). However, it still contains all you need to know to improve your skating and I would highly recommend this book as one of the best I have read for skating instruction for both beginners and advanced skaters alike. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
My daughter, a figure skating coach, and I are on our 3rd copy: people keep borrowing this book and keeping it!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Beauty on Ice doesn't exist off the ice!
I have to say I was surprised by Christine Brennan's take on Tonya Harding. Tonya Harding is now a pariah in the world of American figure skating even though she helped many of today's figure skating athletes to become household names and wealthy as well. Tonya doesn't see any of it. It's ironic that Tonya Harding can't skate professionally while convicted rapist Mike Tyson is allowed to box but that's figure skating. Between the 1992 and 1994 Olympic Winter Games, the infamous incident by Nancy's clubbing by one of Tonya's hired goons caught everybody off guard. Poor Tonya, she was the girl from blue collar upbringing, divorced parents, and quite a dysfunctional childhood. I think if this was played out in Hollywood. Nancy and Tonya would have made up before the 1994 Winter Olympics and let it go down in history. No, the FBI was brought in. In the 1992 games, too much attention was paid on Nancy Kerrigan and the plight of her legally blind mother who later claimed that her daughter deserved the gold medal. In 1992, everybody including myself who watched the Olympic games knew about Nancy's poor mother. Nancy got more attention than Tonya and Kristi Yamaguchi who went to win the First Olympic Gold Medal for Ladies' Figure Skating since Dorothy Hamill. Still, she was shadowed by Nancy's blind mother. Since 1994, I became disillusioned when I saw figure skaters past judgment on Tonya Harding. I haven't lost respect for Jayne Torvill because she was actually quite ladylike in all retrospect. Sadly, Tonya was never the graceful skater but an excellent jumper who was the first American woman to land a triple axel. Tonya's happiness was short-lived by an abusive marriage and a US Figure Skating Association that cared more about maintaining a facade of a happy family. I didn't know that Nancy was not well-liked. YOu could have sure fooled me. Even now, Nancy is still the victim of a dumb plot. Had she had any sense, she would have forgiven Tonya and let it go but no it became a nightmare and a dream for the tabloids of the time. My respect for figure skating is gone. I am not surprised by the homosexuality in figure skating because it's so obvious but I wish they would just admit it rather than cover it up now. Even now, you just wonder why some aren't married or dating anybody. Anyway, the sport has changed for the worse in my opinion. It's become corrupted by greed, jealousy, and envy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The grit behind the glamor
Journalist Christine Brennan takes fans of this sport behind the scenes for a brutal but truthful look at a sport known as much for its glitter as its athleticism. Brennan exposes it all, from the pressure of competition to the facades perpetuated by an antiquated skating federation. Using real interviews with the figure skating's top athletes, Brennan covers tragedy and triumph with unbiased professionalism. Highly recommend for skaters and fans of figure skating ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Less interesting than it could have been
This was ... pretty good ... but kinda like the little girl with the little curl. Where it's good it's really interesting. Where it's bad it just ... dull. Some sections the author goes into a lot of detail about skaters and events.Other sections read rather like a biblical geneology. "Jane Jones won in 1936 and Sue Smith won in 1937 and Mary Martin won in 1938 and 1939." Tell us MORE about Jane and Sue and Mary. What were their performances like? Who was the competition?
4-0 out of 5 stars Well-written history without being sappy
This book will go over the heads of most skating fans and the author admits it.He even says that most books about figure skating fall into the category of "juvenile literature" because that's who's interested in them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Long overdue...a perfect 6.0
This is a brilliant book -- and sorely needed one for afficionados of the sport. At last -- a serious, scholarly, up-to-date history of figure skating! The book traces the history of sport (the development of skates, positions, moves, etc.) from its earliest days in the Middle Ages when skating was a practical way of getting around in Nordic countries, through the first skating clubs in Elizabethan England and its rise in popularity in the 19th century, and, especially, 19th century America. The book is well documented, with footnotes and photos of all the important figures (there's even a picture of St. Lydwina -- the Roman Catholic patroness of skaters!)It gives a descriptive accounts of figure skating moves (jumps, spins, spirals, school figures, etc.) and how they developed along with their inventors; it also focuses on innovators of the sport who may not have won any championships and the development of the scoring system. It is all-embracing in its approach describing the sport as found in Europe, the Americas and the sport's recent surge in Asia.It also includes an appendix with tables of all winners (up to the year 2005) for World, European, Olympic and various oher championships. There are photographs of every world and Olympic champion -- a nice added extra, as it helps reveal how much the sport has changed through the past century. This book is for those who are serious about the sport, follow it closely and are interested in detailed accounts of figure skating as a competitive sport with a noble history, and as entertainment -- qualities unique to skating. It's a terrific book -- and it's about time! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful sport's ugly secrets exposed
I endorse this book not only as an Amazon Reviewer but as a skater. The dirty deals, corrupt judging, and federation attempts to advance their favorite skaters at the expense of equally talented but less-popular athletes (who, for whatever reason, don't fit their cookie-cutter out of date "image"), Jackson tells all. Should be required viewing for everyone in the sport, especially the federations, who must take a hard look at their own ethics and make some changes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Im whiter than white
This book goes more into the detail of this judge "coming out" rather than the real issues in the skating world. He talks about encounters with other gay judges which have nothing to do with the scandal in Salt Lake City or the alledged corruption at the ISU and USFSA.He fails to make his case and points fingers without facts.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Edgy "On Edge"
If you think figure skating is crooked, this book comes close to absolutely proving it.It's no wonder that the author, an international judge, appears to have been booted out by the figure skating establishment over his attempt to set up a rival figure skating union. The book covers the author's not particularly distinguished skating career and his coming out, aspects of his life I somewhat surprisingly intereting. He declines to diss dirt about the skaters, but does rip the judging establishment into small pieces. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The Star Of the Ice Show.
You might think that Scott Hamilton led a charmed life in the world of ice skating. Not so, he had many setbacks; but his determination to show the world that he is somebody and his talent (plus hard work) let him enjoy comebacks and show his mettle.Overcoming many personal obstacles, he proved that no one could surpass him on the ice.
4-0 out of 5 stars What a guy!!! :-)
I loved reading this book.I am a big ice-skating fan and have watched it since I was a kid.
4-0 out of 5 stars All the previous reviews have a point!
I found myself reading the previous reviews, and agreeing with all of them. Even the negative ones.At the same time, I enjoyed this book.Maybe because he speaks so candidly and with such sincere affection for many of my favorites (especially Ekaterina Gordeeva & Sergei Grinkov).

4-0 out of 5 stars For true fans
This book will be appreciated by true T&D addicts, although switching back and forth between their two voices made it seem mildly disjointed.Details of the unglamourous side of life on the road gave a realistic perspective. Not bad,but it somehow left me wanting more.A great deal of trivial details without alot of the substance such a book could have had.Fans will enjoy it,casual readers may not...

4-0 out of 5 stars Another take...
I guess I'm wierd, but what I loved about this book was the backstories on the six skaters, their history, families, coaches, etc. Fascinating stuff. What I got from this was a whole new level of respect and admiration for the pairs skaters coming from Russia and China.I'm also happy to see that the two Chinese skaters featured in this book will be skating in Torino 2006.I'll be watching them with great interest - at least as much as NBC allows me to see of them - and thinking about little six-year old Shen Xue and her bloody socks. There's not much new ground broken on the scandal that rocked the Salt Lake City Olympics, but for anyone interested in knowing more about the skaters involved, I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
This book has interesting information on the childhoods, tribulations, and triumphs of Jamie Sale, David Pelletier, Shen Xue, Zhao Hongbo, and Elena Berezhnaya. The one person it is lacking information on is Anton Sikharulidze. It goes through their elite careers and touches on competitions leading up to the games. The play-by-play account of the Olympics brings you back to the day you watched the pair's final. If you are looking for information on the scandal other than what was printed in newspapers, don't bother reading this book. Overall, it gives information that is hard to find elsewhere on the six skater's lives before and after the Olympics. I highly reccomend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much backstory
The book was not my cup of tea. I don't remember the events enough to care about any of the people covered in this book. The part I was most interested in was the scandal with the judging, not with the lovingly written back stories of each of the skaters. By the time the book got to the bit I was interested in I was bored and put the book aside. ... Read more

Brian Boitano was a "daredevil roller skater" in Sunnyvale, California, before hismother took him to an ice show at age 8. After that he laced up figure skates instead, and as any of thesport's growing legion of fans know, his dream to win an Olympic medal came true in Calgary in 1988.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great look inside the sport from one of its legends
Brian Boitano pushed himself AND his chief competitor, Brian Orser, in his quest for Olympic gold, and in doing so, both of them elevated the level of the entire sport.
4-0 out of 5 stars Brian Boitnano's book on skating
A nicely written book, describing his experiences learning his craft, as well as good insight into the sport. It would beimproved if there were more pictures of the skaters setting up and completeing their moves.Recommended reading for young skaters, as well as their parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boitano Tells it Like it Is!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine book
This is book is a nice book, but it seemed to focus on Tara Lipinski and Michelle Kwan, along with the Tara-Michelle thing a little too much. Skaters listed in the front are supposed to be the ones the book focuses on, although some of these skaters get only one paragraph of writing about them. In the final part, "The Olympics", the whole thing was basically about Tara's win and Michelle's silver. There was a little bit about the mens' event, but I found it confusing.
4-0 out of 5 stars Olympic Gold or Living Forever
Christine Brennan wrote in Edge of Glory that Tonya Harding has more raw jumping talent then anyother female ice skater in US history. For all practical purposes, Brennan is calling Harding the most talented female ice skater to ever live.
4-0 out of 5 stars my thoughts
although i found this book engaging and enjoyed reading about the lives of these skaters, i personally felt that the anti-taraism was uncalled for. Having had the opportunity to have met both Tara and Michelle, I know that Tara did have her ways of coming off as arrogant, but so did Michelle. She is not as sweet and even tempered as christine made her out to be. It's a wonder why she doesnt mention the reason to why her past dress maker[Marie Talbot] stopped making her dresses. Her comment about her scores in the kiss and cry area [apparently she felt that she deserved a higher score regardless of her mistakes] . Dont bash on one skater and make the other skater come off as the nice one, they all have their ways of being arrogant. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Highest Endeavor of the Human Spirit
Even though this book has its sad ending, Ms. Nichols writes a wonderful story of parents sacrificing - emotionally and financially - for their children, friendly competitiion without acrimony, and the fruition of the efforts of hard work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Long Overdue Look At Some Promising Athletes
Nikki Nichols did a fantastic job in researching the stories of each the 18 figure skaters - and their family members - that were on the ill-fated 1961 flight that crashed in Belgium on its way to the World Championships in Prague.Little has been written over the years on the lives of these talented athletes and it is wonderful to see their stories fleshed out far beyond just being a morbid statistic.Special attention - and deservedly so - is giving to the Owens family:Maribel Sr. (the many times National champion in singles and pairs whose students had included Tenley Albright and Frank Carroll), Maribel Jr. (the reserved, newly crowned pair champion with her boyfriend Dudley Richards), and Laurence Owen (the 16 year old, vivacious singles skater who was poised to succeed Albright and the lovely Carol Heiss as queen of the ice).
5-0 out of 5 stars Poignant Memoir
"Frozen in Time" is a well researched and well written look at the entire U.S. Skating team that was killed in a 1961 plane crash in Brussels.Author Nikki Nichols focuses mostly on the Owen family (nine time National Champion Maribel Vinson Owen and her daughters, "Little Maribel" and newly crowned National Champion, 16 year old Laurence) and Stephanie Westerfield, Laurence's closest rival and her sister Sharon. The book also gives insight into what skating was like at that time, with detailed explanations of elements such as school figures which are no longer included in competitions and the different competitions themselves, including the North American Championships which no longer exists. Finally, the book also talks about the devastating affect the deaths had on family members left behind as well as how the deaths forever changed the United States figure skating program.

5-0 out of 5 stars from one of the best
i think the book is great and i have been awarded several medals and trophies in skating. it has a good technique for beginingto professional. the best of the best!!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars I wish there is a two-and-a-half star rating
Like my title says, I wish there is a two and a half star rating. I have read better skating books than this one, such as " Figure Skating For Dummies" and "The Essential Figure Skater". This book is too vague in some parts of the book and too much information in the other parts. Not a very good guide to figure skating. The beautiful pictures of famous figure skaters are the best parts of this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars To much covered not enough info!
This book is only 128pgs and covered to much with to little info. With everything covered this book needed to be at least 300pgs. Over all worth reading. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Nicely Illustrated But Not All That Well-Edited Book
Well, I know that, as a formerly HUGE ice skating fan, you have to have every book or movie that has ice skating even mentioned. And what better than to get a big, sleek illustrated book packed with glossy photos of all your favorite glamorous skating stars, right? Not-so-right. Sure, I liked the book when I first unwrapped it for my birthday and everything, and while the pictures are good, it doesn't seem that for such a sleek looking book that there was editing to match AT ALL. Here is an example of an error in the book, and believe me, there are PLENTY more to match: on page 14, it shows a picture of Tara Lipinski doing a layback spin and underneath the picture it reads 1999 European Championships. Well, if the person reading this book is a compulsive studier of figure skating, they will immediately recognize three critical mistakes:(1) Tara retired immediately after her victory at the 1998 Olympic Games and went pro (2) the picture is of her in her Olympic blue long program outfit with the Nagano logo imprinted on the ice visible to everyone's eyes (3) no American/non-European has been allowed to compete at the European Championships since 1948.
1-0 out of 5 stars Editor needed
Yes, this book has some nice photos, but many are labelled wrong. Skaters who represent asian countries have photos labelled as "1999 European championships". Sure. Every time I look in this book, I find morespelling and factual errors. Who is Tatyana MalAnina? Plus some of thephotos are not flattering at all! I agree that most of the info is straightfrom different websites, magazines and articles.

3-0 out of 5 stars More of the same information
This book supplied more of the same information that you can find in any magazine interview or other story about many of today's famous figure skating stars (and a few from the past). The pictures were of good quality, but there was very little insight or new information to be foundin the text, and many of the pictures were similar to what you'd find inother magazines or books about figure skaters.Read more
