4-0 out of 5 stars Tis the season!
We get snow on the ground, and friends and couples will once again hit the powdery hills. Why not join them? Learn to snowboard - lessons on the slope are great, but give yourself a headstart with this terrific book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Better than lessons in some cases
I took 2 group lessons and was never in so much pain. I was ready to quit. I got this book and went from complete beginner to intermediate after 4 times on slopes. I read entire book, then before and after each session I re-read the section with drills for my level. The book has some ambiguous descriptions and re-reading after snowboarding is important for understanding. If you don't have patience to re-read, work on drills, and take time to understand each sentence, then you'd be better off finding a qualified instructor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have knowledge of the concepts of snowboarding
Once I started reading it I could not put it down!Being a rather new snowboarder now going into my 3rd season this book makes sense of all the things I've learned the hard way.By no means does this nor any book replace the need for lessons, but it does a great job of illustrating the concepts of this awesome sport.5 out of 5 stars for sure. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Buy the Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding instead.
This book is decent, but the Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding is a much more in-depth and well written book.It is also more entertaining with funny drawings and tips. This book really only skims the surface on all the areas you need to start snowboarding.

5-0 out of 5 stars (no title)
This book is great for begginers and also explains advanced tricks and techniques like methods, spins, cliff drops, carving and explains a little about racing and competative snowboarding. It also gives you usefull info like what to eat before you go, warm-ups, getting on and off chairlifts, ect.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's all about the How-To
I'm usually pretty skeptical of How-To books, but this one was recommended to me. It's quite cool. I was able to understand it, and it actually helped me get started snowboarding. I can seriously recommend this book for regular people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Mr. Goldman
Awesome book. Used it to help decide what equipment to get and to teach my girlfriend the basics. The writing style is easy to read and the contents are great for an introduction. The descriptions and pictures of slipping, edging and traversals made were really illuminating, and instructions on riding powder made me want to go lay some tracks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, clear and descriptive--a must for snowboarders
Goldman knows the sport of snowboarding and does a fantastic job of providing all the essential information anyone else would need to know to enjoy snowboarding. From equipment to accessories to getting started basics and advanced skills, I enjoyed reading the book and felt I learned something new on every page. The photos and drawings were also super helpful to me.Goldman is a fine writer who undoubtedly loves to snowboard and I walked away from having read the book feeling Goldman's enthusiasm for the sport and wishing it were already winter. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great informative book
I bought this book for a research project and it was extremely useful and informative and very interesting. I'd recommend it to anyone, but especially snowboarders(a must read). It's always good to know the history of your sport.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lame
Fake, pretentious, and totally dumb if you know anything about snowboarding. If snowboarders were like bands, this writer would be the cheesy a&r rep trying to be cool while making money off the peeps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for all but great for some
This book to many may have seemed lame and false, when in fact was practically written by pioneers such as Burton, Sims, Morrow, and Kemper founders. If you were born after 86 you would get the book, if u were bornbefore its a great, not a must, a great read. I loved it because of howmuch of a taboo it was, it was a current day mystery that wasn't respectedat first, and needed brave people to design the board from a ski with arope, much more than that, but great read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Read the book, then decide
It's just amazing to me that people would actually rate a book without reading it! Blows me away! You can always tell an innovative method when the those representing the institutions feel threatened. Anyway this is a great book--fun,easy to read and to put into practice. I've given it to pros and beginners and they've all gotten something very new from it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning - vulgar language and a focus on Zen and Metaphysics
This book could have been a winner, but unfortunately the author distracts and distorts his snowboard knowledge with unnecessary vulgar language and continual illusions to eastern religion.Another problem with this book is that the author enjoys being untraditional to the point of creating new terminology and changing well established terminology such as with the term, "goofy-foot", he coins a new term which is not mainstream. It is a mistake to bypass the standard terms when learning to snowboard because it will be very difficult to talk snowboarding with other boarders if you don't know mainstream the lingo. The author refuses to accept that falling is a part of this sport. He refuses to see the value in the "falling leaf" technique, and then coins a new term for "his" falling leaf technique. The author has a lot of knowledge, but the vulgar language, the Zen and constant striving with mainstream snowboarding get old quick. After reading part of the book, I ended up discarding it because of the language and constant focus on Zen instead of snowboarding technique.

3-0 out of 5 stars May be ok for beginners
I initially picked up this book while I was snowboarding in Vail. I checked out the table of contents and quickly flipped to one of the latter chapters (maybe even the last). There I read a short bit about the difference between your right brain and your left brain and how that relates to your confidence snowboarding. Due to that little bit, I decided to give this book a shot. It seemed interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for the backcountry enthusiast
If you are planning a winter/spring backcountry trip and want accurate, detailed information on routes, terrain, and level of difficulty for some of the best skiing/snowboarding terrain in California than this is the perfect book. The book is well organized, clearly written andbeautifullyillustrated. Everytime I pick up the book I find myself mentally planningnew trips and plotting descent routes on the photographs. An addedplus to the book is the wealth of information that it contains on preparingfor a backcountry experience. The author covers everything from avalanchedanger to equipment to bring on an extended trip. He even includes anexcellent website for those who want more information. There always isa question in my mind when I read any backcountry guide about the accuracyof the information. Who wants to set out on a trip only to find out thatthe route maps or the descriptions don't match the terrain? The author issomeone with extensive backcountry experience who has done each of the 50trips described in the book at least once. We all sould be so lucky! Havingtaken two trips with the author that are detailed in the book, I can saythat he did an excellent job of describing the routes and the terrain. Ifyou are someone who is looking for backcountry ski/snowbaording adventure, this book will make your trip planning a whole lot easier. Enjoy

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
I read this after reading P3: Pipes, parks, and powder. At first, I thought of it as the girl version of Todd Richard's book (P3) and didn't want to read it.But I read it, it's not just for girls.Any boarder will enjoy it.Maybe the pink cover turns off guy readers, ha, ha.

3-0 out of 5 stars cant right good
Having graduated college, I think I was too well educated to read this book.It was so, like, 7th graderish. This book isn't very well written. It jumps around a bit, leaving the reader confused. For example, Tina talks about how she got a car soon after getting her drivers license, but then mentions that she crashed it a year later. So after reading about how she crashed it, she continues talking about how she drove everywhere.Fortunately, you can tell that Tina starts to mature a little bit as a writer near the end of the book. The other problem that I had with this book is that she tries to make women seem more disadvantaged than they really are. While there are 10x less professional women snowboarders, there are 10x as many male snowboarders, so it all evens out.Women have been a big part of snowboarding since it's inception, so I am therefore not convinced of her adversity. She does get credit back, though, because of her participation in the Boarding for Breast Cancer program.Overall, I'd skip this book and read "Hawk: Occupation: Skateboarder" if you are into the "Action" sports books or "Swimming to Antarctica" if you want a women-pushing-the-sport type of book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginner Snowboarder
This book is awesome.I opened it and finished it in its entirety in one sitting. It was such an exciting read.I just recently started snowboarding and am totally psyched about it.Tina's changes in life are definitely relatable. She is an inspiration to me because there are so many girls who side-track themselves due to heartbreaking, intellectually debased boys.I've seen it happen all too often and has happened to me as well.To stay focused on your own goals and not let life get in the way is so difficult.Guys seem to have no problem doing it, but she proved that girls can pull it together too.

5-0 out of 5 stars In-depth principles.
After a few days in the slopes, I purchased this book along with "The Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding" (mostly due to the positive reviews here). After reading both books from cover to cover, it is my conclusion that "Snowboarding Skills" is, without a doubt, a better book.
4-0 out of 5 stars good for beginners
I first read this book after my first 5 days on a snowboard, and like many other reviews of snowboarding books have stated there is no substitute for being on the mountain and/or getting a few lessons. Having said that everyone has different ways of explaining concepts, and this book helped to reinforce some of the basics for me like keeping weight forward. After having read this book I had a few principles in the back of my head the next time I went boarding . another good feature is the authors use of other snowboarders to explain key concepts discussed in the book. Also the photos used where excellent better than the diagrams and pics in some other books i have seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Learning Book.
Reading is not my favorite thing in the world, but when I see a good book I actually read it.This book is called, "Ultimate Snowboarding".The book tells about good skills and techniques you need to now about snowboarding. It has good trick tips also in the book.I rate this book 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Extreme Bookshelves
Billy Miller has compiled a collection of stories written by some of the best writers in the world of snowboarding. He's taken them and organized them in such a way that any newbie (beginner) or seasoned snowboarding pro will walk away having learned something about the sport they love or hope to learn to love. Learn the history of the sport, and then continue onward into the personal lives of some of the sports icons. Learn basic and advanced tricks all to the tune of rocking full color photography, albeit some of it slightly outdated. Consider it a history lesson in extreme with an inside look at a snowy white snowboarding world that is now as common as MTV, but was once a renegade outlaw sport. Take it to the limit. Billy Miller and his team of contributors did. You won't be disappointed in this book, I thought I knew everything there was to know about snowboarding. Mr. Miller proved me wrong. ... Read more
